The so-called polymer lithium battery refers to the lithium ion battery which uses polymer as electrolyte. Specifically, it can be divided into "semi polymer" and "all polymer".

"Semi polymer" refers to coating a layer of polymer (generally PVDF) on the barrier film to make the adhesion of the cell stronger, the battery can be made harder, and its electrolyte is still a liquid electrolyte. The "all polymer" refers to the use of polymer to form a gel network inside the cell, and then inject electrolyte to form an electrolyte. Although "all polymer" batteries still use liquid electrolyte, the amount is much less, which greatly improves the safety performance of lithium ion batteries. As far as the author knows, only SONY is currently mass producing "all polymer" lithium ion batteries.

On the other hand, polymer battery refers to the lithium ion battery with aluminum plastic packaging film as the outer packaging, which is also known as the soft pack battery. This packaging film is composed of three layers, namely PP layer, Al layer and nylon layer. Because PP and nylon are polymers, this cell is called polymer battery.

What are the eight advantages of using polymer lithium batteries?

Good safety performance

The polymer lithium battery adopts aluminum plastic flexible packaging in structure, which is different from the metal shell of the liquid battery cell. Once a safety hazard occurs, the liquid battery cell is easy to explode, while the polymer battery cell can only inflate at most.

Thin

The common liquid lithium battery adopts the method of customizing the shell first, and then plugging the positive and negative electrode materials. There is a technical bottleneck when the thickness is less than 3.6mm, but there is no such problem with the polymer battery core. The thickness can be less than 1mm, which is in line with the current mobile phone demand direction.

Light weight

The weight of polymer battery is 40% lighter than that of steel shell lithium battery with the same capacity and specification, and 20% lighter than that of aluminum shell battery

Large capacity

The capacity of polymer battery is 10~15% higher than that of steel case battery of the same size and specification, and 5~10% higher than that of aluminum case battery, making it the first choice for color screen mobile phones and MMS mobile phones.

Small internal resistance

The internal resistance of polymer cells is smaller than that of ordinary liquid cells. At present, the internal resistance of domestic polymer cells can even be less than 35m Ω, which greatly reduces the self consumption of batteries, extends the standby time of mobile phones, and can fully reach the level of international standards.

Customized shape

Polymer batteries can increase or reduce the cell thickness according to customer needs, and develop new cell models. They are cheap and have a short mold opening cycle. Some can even be customized according to the shape of the mobile phone, so as to make full use of the battery shell space and improve the battery capacity.

Good discharge characteristics

The polymer battery uses colloidal electrolyte. Compared with liquid electrolyte, colloidal electrolyte has stable discharge characteristics and higher discharge platform.

Simple design of protective plate

Due to the use of polymer materials, the electric core will not catch fire or explode? Is the cell itself safe enough? Therefore, PTC and fuse can be omitted in the protection circuit design of polymer battery to save battery cost.
