The so-called flexible battery is a kind of name compared with the cylindrical and square hard shell batteries. Its internal composition (positive pole, negative pole, diaphragm, electrolyte) is not very different from the square and cylindrical lithium batteries. The biggest difference is that the flexible battery uses aluminum plastic composite film as the outer shell. In the event of a potential safety hazard, the flexible battery will only blow air and crack at most. Square and cylindrical batteries use metal as the shell.

As for the flexible battery, in terms of structure, it has good safety performance, light weight, large capacity, small internal resistance, flexible design and other advantages. Generally speaking, the soft battery mainly has the following advantages:

1. Good safety: The flexible battery is structurally packaged with aluminum plastic film. When the thermal management is out of control or puncture occurs, the flexible battery will provide a buffer space for the cell, which will bulge and deform, eventually catch fire or smoke, but will not explode.

2. Light weight and high energy density: the weight of the soft battery is 40% lighter than that of the steel battery with the same capacity, and 20% lighter than that of the aluminum battery, so it usually has a high energy density. At present, most of the domestic battery enterprises that have broken the 300Wh/kg energy density threshold adopt soft battery.

3. Good electrochemical performance and long service life: the internal resistance of the soft packed battery is small, which can greatly reduce the self consumption of the battery; In addition, the cycle life of the flexible battery is longer.

4. It is small in thickness and can be made thinner. The common liquid lithium battery uses the method of first customizing the shell and then plugging the positive and negative electrode materials. When the thickness is less than 3.6 mm, there is a technical bottleneck. The lithium iron phosphate and lithium manganate battery cells do not have this problem, and the thickness can be less than 2.5 mm.

5. The capacity of lithium iron phosphate and lithium manganate soft packed lithium batteries with the same specifications is 10-15% higher than that of steel case batteries and 5-10% higher than that of aluminum case batteries.
